North Carolina DOT Rest Areas

O’Connor Company completed the North Carolina DOT Rest Areas project, which included multiple LEED-certified buildings on both sides of the highway. The site also featured shelters and water elements.

The buildings were constructed with slab-on-grade foundations, masonry, and wood framing, featuring exteriors of split stone and cedar lap siding. Some buildings had Structural Insulated Panel (SIP) roofs with metal coverings, while others included lightweight concrete roofs with garden features.

Interiors combined drywall with exposed glue-lam beams, cedar ceilings, and walls. Visitor centers featured stone veneer fireplaces, and restroom buildings were equipped with high-efficiency heating and ventilation systems.

The project also included new electrical services, high-efficiency lighting, and low-flow fixtures throughout.
